The Haunted Bookshop – A Favorite Bookstores Post

It’s Monday, and that’s not a good thing for a lot of people.  But as I do from time to time here on The Midnight Goose, today is a post about one of my favorite bookstores that I’ve had the privilege of visiting.  The bookstore in the spotlight today is on The Haunted Bookshop, located in Iowa City, Iowa.

During a trip across Iowa in April of 2017, the missus and I made a stop at several bookstores across the state–but this was one of the most unique and interesting.  Located at 219 N. Gilbert St in Iowa City, IA, The Haunted Bookshop is in the Northside District in the historic Wentz House.  According to their website over 50,000 used, rare, and out-of-print books covering 50 different subject areas.

The Haunted Bookshop was established in 1978, but moved to its current location in 2013.  The Wentz House was built in 1847 and is of Greek revival architecture.  And due to the age of the house, the history of it, and, of course the name of the business, one would think that the shop is actually haunted.  However, as is pointed out on the website, the store is simply named after The Haunted Bookshop by Christopher Morley.

The bookshop is located fairly close to the University of Iowa, so you can expect to find a lot of foot traffic, young people, and other businesses nearby that attract college age people.  For example, lots of interesting restaurants, bars, and shops.  Additionally, and probably due to these facts, parking seems to be very limited outside of the shop.

Once you are parked–or approaching on foot, the exterior is charming and gorgeous, and it simply draws you in to enter and browse.  When you step inside, it almost feels as though you are entering the home of a book hoarder with excellent organizational skills.  Every room is cozy, warm, inviting, and quiet as a tomb–all inside and outside noises seemingly muffled by layers of books.

There are several chairs and couches where one can settle in with a book recently purchased at the counter right inside the front door.  And you might just run into Nierme or Logan.  Or maybe they will run into you.  All in all, this bookstore is absolutely charming–and you can absolutely get lost for hours, browsing all of the shelves filling the numerous rooms.

If you happen to be in Iowa City, Iowa, and want to do a little book shopping, be sure to check it out!
